It is evident that gaming can be seen in a negative light; it is highly addictive, promotes a sedentary lifestyle and could be detrimental towards mental and physical health. However, as long as parents manage to have control over the amount that their child is gaming, there are actually many benefits. Lets take a look at how your child could benefit from gaming.
In many video games, such as Minecraft and GTA, kids are able to learn essential lessons about survival. Minecraft, a very popular sandbox game teaches children how to survive in isolated surroundings. If your child ever happens to be lost in a forest with limited resources and needs to find survival methods, they will be much more aware of what to start with if they played Minecraft, for example gathering wood, making a fire, finding water and fish, cooking etc. On top of this, games like GTA and Minecraft can really expand your child’s creativity and let them express themselves. Life simulators like these games can really help your child find their comfort zone and interests.
Sports games, such as games produced by video game developer EA can teach your child different tactics and lessons based around sport. For example, if you happen to go 1-0 down in a competitive game of FIFA, your child will learn over time how to pick themselves up from a disappointment and fight back, handling the pressure. It also helps them develop skills like leadership, tactics and work ethic. On top of this, games like FIFA which involve a transfer market system can teach your child basics on finance and investments. ‘Sniping’ on FIFA is a method to increase your profit on the game’s currency by finding players you can buy at the lowest possible price and selling them for more. It also involves studying the market and looking at what times the players go down or up in value, so that you are able to make more profit as a result. It helps your child make smart investments and gives them a potential career option. This currency sector of the game is constantly rising in value, and could be a form of crypto currency that can potentially earn you a lot of real money. Actually, gaming could potentially earn your kid a lot of money, from different things such as selling services, accounts, professional gaming and more. For example, designing Roblox skins for a living could actually earn you more than enough to make ends meet.
Popular platform Enjin provides website building services for your favourite video games, on top of in-game integrations and Enjin Coin, a way of tokenizing in-game purchases. Developers are aligning cryptocurrencies with in-game purchases, which makes it possible to put a value on your items and transfer them to different games. This could potentially boost the value of in-game assets drastically by 2025.
FPS and Battle Royale games such as Call of Duty, Fortnite and Rainbow Six Seige can teach your children communication, strategizing and teamwork, all essentials for the workplace. For example, if you play a squad game of Call of Duty: Warzone, your squad communicates and strategizes to try and be the last one standing more than you think. You must think about where to land, how to loot your items, how to handle enemies using teamwork, where to rotate, etc. If you are in the workplace, and working on a project with your team, you must use communication to overcome any potential obstacles and strategize how you are to go about it, and you can apply these skills from these games.
There are various debates that these video games promote violence, however, and cause school shootings and more. I completely disagree with this statement, as FPS games should be a platform where children are able to release all their aggression, rather than fuel it. There is no evidence whatever contributing to this statement, and if these were to promote violence, then we can say the same about movies such as John Wick and James Bond.
Professional gamers who attend tournaments can be easily labelled as ‘dumb’, ‘addicted’ and ‘useless’, however they are much smarter than you think. Professional gaming should be considered as a profession just as office work and sports is. Professional gamers are by no means addicted to games; as a matter of fact, they do it to get better and earn money, just like any other job. They have to have an extreme work ethic and great resilience. On top of this, the amount of strategizing and thought that goes into one tournament or video game is immense for them. They could be thinking about 50 things at once while playing a video game, and how they are going to apply them, this requires a lot of brain power.
On top of this, gaming of course has many negatives. It promotes a very sedentary lifestyle, and if you are unable to put limits over your child’s gaming time, they could potentially put on weight, and spend less time with their family and it could be detrimental towards social interactions. It can make you extremely antisocial and grumpy. It also can damage your eyesight, give you headaches and eyestrain. It can potentially damage your mental and physical health. It can also affect your child’s academic performance, which you must be aware of.
However, if parents do manage to put a good control on the amount their child games, it can be very good for them, teach them great life skills and earn them a lot of money. Perhaps adults only manage to see gaming in a bad light due to the fact that they never grew up with video games and are unaware of the positives and the happiness it gives children. However, I suggest they overcome this and let their children indulge in some video game time, as long as they don’t get lost in it, because it could be invaluable to their future success.
The FIFA transfer market introduces various investment and financial skills. These in-game assets could even be valued a lot in cryptocurrency soon.
